The $89 diagnostic

One fee to start, one price to decide on

Every repair starts with a diagnostic visit, and that visit costs $89. For it, a technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room, whether in Roseville, St. Paul or a neighboring Ramsey County city, hears the story of the symptom and tests the machine with a meter. The goal is to pin down the part that actually quit, be it a gas igniter, a refrigerator’s defrost heater or a washer’s drain pump, and to explain it in words that make sense at the kitchen table. Nothing gets replaced on a hunch. Once the cause is clear, the technician writes one figure for the repair on a quote sheet and hands it to you. At that point you decide, and you are under no pressure either way.

If you approve, the $89 you already owe becomes part of the written price. It is not a separate charge stacked on the repair; the figure on the paper is the whole amount for the visit and the fix. Turn it down, and $89 is what you pay before the technician packs up. People decline for good reasons: a machine near the end of its life, a move coming up, a plan to remodel the kitchen. We would rather you make that call with real information than spend money on a dishwasher you were going to replace anyway. Some machines are past saving; the technician will say so in plain terms, and $89 closes out the visit.

Most repairs finish the same visit, because the truck carries the inlet valves, igniters, thermal fuses, pumps and belts that fail most in local homes. Some parts have to be ordered, such as a control board for a newer front-loader or a specific wall oven element. In that case we order it, text you when it arrives and come back in a new two-hour window, and coming back does not change the written price. Rentals and townhome associations follow the same steps, except the owner or manager gets the figure on their phone and texts back a yes or no before any tools come out. Each finished repair gets a complete test cycle while the technician is still there, and the invoice lists the written warranty terms.
