Ice makers

Ice makers in homes across Roseville and Ramsey County

Refrigerator ice makers work hardest in summer, when humid days in the 80s and 90s send everyone to the freezer door and homes near White Bear Lake, Lake Owasso and Snail Lake fill coolers for the dock. Winter cuts the demand, but the supply line keeps working: a thin copper or plastic tube runs from the basement or the sink cabinet to the back of the refrigerator, and a crimped section or a stretch along a cold outside wall can stop the fill. The water in that line matters as well. Homes in St. Paul, Roseville, Maplewood, Falcon Heights, Little Canada and Arden Hills draw softened St. Paul water. Shoreview pumps hard well water whose iron and manganese are filtered out while the hardness stays, and White Bear Lake runs a softening plant for its wells.

Most ice maker trouble comes down to water not arriving or ice not leaving. The fill valve, mounted low on the refrigerator’s rear wall, can clog at its inlet screen or fail electrically, the fill tube into the freezer can freeze solid, the ice maker module can lose its motor or heater, and dispenser doors, augers and flaps wear out. Consider a Shoreview walkout where the ice maker has made only a handful of small cubes a day since spring. The valve’s inlet screen is crusted with white scale from the hard well water, while the valve coil still reads normal on the meter. We replace the valve, thaw and clear the fill tube, change the water filter and watch a full fill before leaving.

Symptoms

What a failing ice maker looks like

  • No ice at all

Before blaming any part, we make sure nobody bumped the shutoff arm or switch, and that the freezer sits near zero, cold enough for cubes to set. Then we meter the fill valve, look for a frozen fill tube and test the module’s motor and heater to find where the cycle stops.

  • Shrunken, hollow cubes

Weak flow sits behind most of these: a clogged water filter, a partly plugged inlet screen or a kinked supply line. Hard well water speeds the clog. We check the flow, change or bypass the filter for testing, and clean or replace the valve.

  • Leaks or sheets of ice

A valve that does not shut fully, a cracked fill tube or a refrigerator that sits out of level can overflow the mold, so the bin fills with one fused block or a puddle spreads across the kitchen floor. The technician tracks down where the extra water comes from and stops it there.

  • Dispenser jammed or clicking

Clumped ice from a slow-closing door flap, or a thaw during a power outage, can bind the auger. A failed auger motor or door solenoid clicks without dispensing. We break up the clump, test the motor and solenoid, and check the flap seal.

  • Bad taste or dark specks

Ice soaks up freezer odors, and an old water filter passes stale flavor. Iron or manganese grit that slips past well-water treatment can show up as dark specks. We change the filter, check the line and suggest a filter schedule that suits your water.

  • Stalled after a storm

A July storm that flickers the lights can stop a harvest halfway or scramble the control. Some models just need a reset; others have a damaged module. We test the module and board and tell you which applies before quoting.

The visit

Inside an ice maker service call

  1. 1

    Start at the supply line

Floors get protected first. The technician then eases the refrigerator out, checks the shutoff, the line and the filter, and confirms water reaches the valve before testing anything inside the freezer.

  2. 2

    Meter the cycle

We test the fill valve coils, the module motor, the mold heater and the freezer temperature. The failed part is pointed out and explained, and one written price follows for your yes or no.

  3. 3

    Repair and first fill

Valves, modules and fill tubes usually ride along on the truck. Once the repair is done, we check for drips behind the refrigerator, slide it home, and confirm the mold fills properly before writing the warranty onto your invoice.

Brands

Ice maker brands we repair

Whirlpool, KitchenAid and Maytag refrigerators share a family of ice makers and fill valves, so those parts are usually on hand. In remodeled Arden Hills and Shoreview kitchens, GE and Café French-door models often tuck the ice maker up inside one of the doors, and LG bottom-freezer models do the same. Frigidaire, Electrolux, Kenmore and Amana side-by-sides fill rentals and townhomes. Our technicians handle the ice makers inside all of these refrigerators; a standalone ice machine is not something we take on.

Cities

Ice maker calls around Ramsey County

Shoreview homes on hard well water bring many of our clogged valves and crusted fill tubes. White Bear Lake softens its wells, so calls there lean toward worn modules and frozen tubes. Vadnais Heights and Little Canada townhomes often run long supply lines through finished basements, where a kink can hide behind drywall. In New Brighton and Mounds View, older side-by-sides wear out dispenser parts, and ice maker repair in Roseville, on softened St. Paul water, mostly means modules and augers.

Repair or replace

For an older refrigerator whose ice maker keeps failing, our ice maker repair-or-replace guide explains when a new module makes sense and when it does not.

Questions

Ice maker repair questions

Why is my ice maker slow in Shoreview?

Water from Shoreview’s city wells is hard and unsoftened, and minerals collect on the little screen at the valve inlet and load up the water filter. Flow drops, the mold underfills and the cubes shrink. The valve gets cleaned or replaced along with the filter, and a home softener can keep the problem from returning.

Can a frozen fill tube stop the ice maker?

Yes. If the valve drips or cold air reaches the inlet, water freezes in the fill tube and blocks the next fill. We thaw it, find out why it froze, which is often a leaking valve or a failed tube heater on some models, and fix that cause rather than only the symptom.

Do you repair ice makers in St. Paul apartments and duplexes?

Yes. When a tenant in a St. Paul duplex or apartment calls, we text our written quote to the landlord or manager, and the repair waits for their reply. Tenants just open the door and point to the trouble, and in older kitchens we look hard at the supply line too.

Is the $89 extra if you repair the ice maker?

No. Approving the fix turns your $89 into one slice of the quoted figure, and no invoice of ours lists it a second time. Stop after the diagnosis and the $89 is everything you pay, with the meter readings and notes left in your hands either way, ready for whatever you decide next. A household new to us also gets that first repair marked down by up to $15, and a declined repair still ends at $89.

How often should the refrigerator water filter be changed?

Most manufacturers point to a twice-yearly swap, earlier when the flow weakens or the cubes taste stale. Hard well water and iron grit can clog filters faster. Once plugged, a filter shortchanges the door dispenser as much as the ice maker, which is why we often test with a new one first.

Should an ice maker run in a garage refrigerator?

Usually not in an unheated Minnesota garage. In January the water line and fill tube can freeze, and the refrigerator may not keep the freezer cold enough to make ice at all. We can repair the parts, but we will tell you if the location is the real problem and suggest shutting the ice maker off for winter.

Book ice maker repair

Ice makers get the same arithmetic as every other machine we fix: accept our quote and the $89 diagnostic is already within its total; refuse it and you settle up at $89, nothing further. Calling us for the first time? Note it on the booking form, and the quote for your ice maker fix will show up to $15 less, sized to the work involved. That amount comes off the fix itself; the $89 diagnostic sits outside it.
